The Bang, the Gap, and Why It Happened Now
Walk in and look at the shaft above the door. A broken torsion spring shows a clean break with the coils pulled apart. On older west-side doors the springs sit along the horizontal tracks instead, and one will hang slack. Either way the door now weighs its full 150 to 250 pounds.

The door gets clamped to the track first, then any remaining tension is bled out with two solid winding bars. The old spring comes off the shaft and gets measured four ways: wire diameter, inside diameter, overall length, and wind direction. Those four numbers set the replacement.
New springs are wound to a calculated turn count, roughly the door height in feet times four, then fine-tuned. The test is by hand. Released from the opener, the door should hold at waist height without creeping. Only then does the opener go back on and the force settings get rechecked.
