Cable Drum and Bearing Replacement
Drums are the two grooved castings at each end of the torsion shaft that wind the cables. When a groove wears, or a set screw has been chewing the shaft, cables slip and the door starts closing out of square.
Symptoms of a Worn Drum or End Bearing
A cable that keeps jumping the groove after being reseated is the giveaway. So is a rhythmic squeak from one end of the shaft, which is usually a dry or failed end bearing plate. Look for a bright wear line in the drum groove and a shaft scored by set screws.

The new drum has to match the door, since drum size sets how much cable it can take up for a given door height. A standard 400 series drum will not serve a 12 foot high door. Cables are wound with the door fully closed, both drums set to identical length, and the screws torqued to spec.
