Q: Can I safely do what these guides describe?

The inspection, lubrication, sensor and remote articles are written to be followed at home. The counterbalance articles are written so you understand the fault, not so you fix it. Springs, cables, drums and bottom brackets hold the weight of the door and every one of those pieces says so.

Q: Where do the topics come from?

Q: Are the prices in the articles reliable?

They are the same bands published on the pricing guide, and they are ranges with a hedge rather than quotes. Spring wire size and drum capacity come off your door, so a firm figure only exists once someone has measured it.

How to Use These

These are written to be read standing in the garage with the door misbehaving. Most of them work through a symptom in order of likelihood, tell you what each cause sounds like, and give a band for the repair. The point is that you should be able to work out roughly what you are dealing with, and roughly what it costs, before spending anything or letting anyone in.

A fair share of the library is specific to this coast, because the failures here are specific to it. Cables that corrode from the inside out under the galvanizing. Spring coils that pit and hand back cycles. The marine layer wetting and drying hardware every morning through May and June. Santa Ana grit packing roller bearings in October.
