Run the arithmetic before the feelings. Total the repair, set it against an estimated $895 to $1,750 for a new single door installed or an estimated $1,295 to $2,850 for a double, then ask how much service life the untouched parts have left. A repair under roughly a third of replacement cost, on a door with straight sections and sound tracks, is money well spent. Past half, you are paying most of a new door to keep an old one.
Repair, without much argument
Springs, cables, rollers, drums, hinges and openers are consumable hardware bolted to a door that is otherwise fine. A spring pair at an estimated $265 to $430, or cables at an estimated $145 to $245, on a twelve-year-old steel door with clean panels is ordinary upkeep. The door is not the failed item.
Same logic on a single dented section at an estimated $265 to $520 where the model is still made, an off-track correction at an estimated $155 to $295, or an opener swap at an estimated $395 to $720. The opener is a separate machine from the door, and replacing one does not commit you to the other.
Replace, and stop spending
- Rot or delamination. Painted wood doors on the older west-side streets reach a point where the stiles are soft and no filler holds a hinge screw. Once fasteners stop biting, the section is finished.
- Several bent sections. Two or three panels plus hardware and labor gets close to double-door money.
- Discontinued panels. If the profile is out of production you are hunting salvage, and a substitute section on a sun-beaten door will not color match.
- Repeat visits. Three repairs in two years on different parts means the whole system aged together.
- A single-skin door on a garage that has become a room. Insulation cannot be retrofitted to any real standard on a thin uninsulated panel.
The awkward middle
Doors from the 1990s and 2000s east-side build-out are where this call gets genuinely close. The sections are usually sound steel, but the springs, rollers, bearings and opener are all original and all tired at once. Replacing them one at a time over three years costs about what one new insulated door costs, and you still end up with a thirty-year-old door.
Two things tilt it. If the garage is attached and used as a gym, workshop or laundry, an insulated door at an estimated $1,650 to $3,400 changes how the space feels in a way no repair will. And in Eastlake, Rancho del Rey, Otay Ranch, Escaya or Millenia, a new door needs the architectural committee to sign off on style and color, so start that submission before anything is ordered.
Get both numbers on paper
Ask for the repair figure and a replacement figure at the same visit, with parts listed for each. Everything above is a guide range to plan against rather than a quote. A technician who will only give you one of the two numbers is not helping you decide.
